Supporting Aboriginal participants under NDIS
Culturally safe support recognises the importance of family, community, identity, Country, trust and Social and Emotional Wellbeing. NDIS supports should be delivered respectfully and with genuine participant choice and consent.
What culturally safe support can include
- Listening to the participant, family and chosen support people
- Respecting cultural identity, communication style and decision-making preferences
- Working at the participant’s pace and avoiding rushed engagement
- Understanding health, disability, trauma, family and community context
- Linking support planning to goals, strengths and connection
Referral considerations
Helpful referrals explain who should be involved, any cultural preferences, communication needs, risk considerations, existing providers and what support outcome is being requested. Consent should be clear before information is shared.
